{"id":472,"date":"2024-09-11T12:28:41","date_gmt":"2024-09-11T11:28:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tocharwetlands.ie\/?p=472"},"modified":"2025-11-28T14:07:42","modified_gmt":"2025-11-28T14:07:42","slug":"new-wetlands-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tocharwetlands.ie\/ga\/latest-news\/new-wetlands-project\/","title":{"rendered":"New wetland restoration project opens a call for public participation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-7-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d1bdf555c1ffd140fe28788cfde01ab0 wp-block-paragraph\">Expressions of interest sought from local individuals and groups to identify wetland sites to be restored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-ast-global-color-7-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1a24975a2bffa58e3ee1d0c38765cd2b\">T\u00f3char team in NPWS will support successful applicants in restoring their lands by providing funding towards survey work, restoration planning, interpretation and education or restoration actions on the ground.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-ast-global-color-7-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1a0b4fe842809ee7b36f5a9524df147a\">Landowners, communities and local groups in the EU Just Transition Territory are eligible for this call.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-7-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-9fc6f29be7a7bf4dcfba0f9989d34952 wp-block-paragraph\">T\u00f3char is a three-year wetlands restoration project, co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union through the EU Just Transition Fund Programme.&nbsp; Taking its name from the hundreds of ancient paths or toghers laid across the bogs by our ancestors, the project will serve the community, bringing participants on a nature restoration journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-7-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-6d51b6826e49f211dec866f93795e563 wp-block-paragraph\">Welcoming the launch of the call&nbsp;for Expressions of Interest,&nbsp;Minister&nbsp;of State for Nature, and Heritage and Electoral Reform,&nbsp;Malcolm&nbsp;Noonan&nbsp;TD, said: \u201cThe restoration of wetlands is part of the just transition journey towards climate neutrality, a journey where nature can play its part in the provision of a wide range of ecosystem services including nature-based solutions for climate change adaptation and mitigation. But nature also provides solace, health and recreational benefits, particularly for those who live in the vicinity of nature and wetland sites that are in good condition. &nbsp;Restoring wetlands as part of the Just Transition is essential and community participation in this type of activity has numerous benefits. I am delighted to announce the call for Expressions of Interest for the T\u00f3char Wetlands Restoration scheme and I look forward to its outcomes over the next number of years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-7-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c94ad1998a37514239043248b9cb0d66 wp-block-paragraph\">Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald, Cathaoirleach of the Eastern and Midland Regional Assembly said, \u201cThis call for expressions of interest is a great opportunity for individuals, landowners, and communities to play an active role in making a difference. By restoring nature and our peatlands together, we can build climate resilience and a more sustainable future for ourselves and generations to come.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-7-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d8284dfd52ecd9dd3f670e346ae8fecb wp-block-paragraph\">Clare Bannon, Acting Director of EMRA said, \u201cEMRA has been working closely with the NPWS team over the last number of months, and we are looking forward to the next stages as people across the region get involved and engaged with wetland restoration. Restoration of peatlands is one of our key deliverables as we work to bring the community through a just transition loosening the dependency on peat as a fossil fuel.\u201d Overall the project will spend \u20ac12m during its lifetime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-7-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c588e35d793641e7e72d1404537f9056 wp-block-paragraph\">Niall \u00d3 Donnch\u00fa, Director General with NPWS stated that \u201cEngagement and co-operation are the principles on which we depend as we develop initiatives for nature restoration. T\u00f3char Wetlands Restoration is in the early stages of implementation in the midlands and the Just Transition territory. The National Parks and Wildlife wants broad participation in this scheme, to ensure the investment in wetlands and their stakeholders makes a positive impact in as many communities as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-7-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-acfcbcb66989219f1aaa3dbacba94918 wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe hope that people will get involved in T\u00f3char, so that we can co-operate and build relationships together with the land and its wetlands. Restoration of nature goes hand in hand with improving the resilience of communities, particularly important during this time of climate change. We need to care for the land and its keepers, and this includes the wetlands and their users in the EU Just Transition area,\u201d noted Shirley Clerkin, T\u00f3char Project Manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-7-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-543d141a77de48f94fafa88aed4c2b8c wp-block-paragraph\">In order to start the process, T\u00f3char have opened an expression of interest call to landowners, communities and groups to become actively involved in nature restoration for wetlands across the EU Just Transition area. The EU Just Transition Area includes municipal districts in the counties Laois, Longford, Offaly, Westmeath, Roscommon and the Municipal Districts of Ballinasloe (Co Galway), Athy, Clane-Maynooth, (Co Kildare) and Carrick-on-Suir and Thurles (Co Tipperary).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-7-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-6f1d7c054d2f6ad00064f8a191a2b0e1 wp-block-paragraph\">Wetlands are areas where water covers the soil, or is present either at or near the surface all year or for varying periods of time during the year. The wider midlands\u2019 hosts a broad diversity of freshwater wetlands such as marshes, fens, bogs, callows and ponds, each playing a crucial role in ecology, climate change mitigation and adaptation, water quality, healthy environments, local communities and economies. With support from T\u00f3char, nature in the heart of communities across the EU Just Transition territory can be restored with these associated benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-7-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-75028f05dde3aec451b27aa43530301f wp-block-paragraph\">To support participants on this restoration journey, T\u00f3char have created a straight forward step-by step expression of interest form. The T\u00f3char team will follow up with the necessary assistance to progress projects, whether that be through survey work, restoration planning, interpretation and education or restoration actions on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-7-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d53558f3f70bf95466328ea05271aeba wp-block-paragraph\">Monica Byrne, Project Administrator with T\u00f3char said: \u201cThe author Robin Wall Kimmer once wrote&nbsp;\u2018We restore the land, and the land restores us\u2019, and this project takes inspiration from the idea that ecological restoration is inseparable from reconnecting people and the landscape. Offaly R42 HX39 by 31 October 2024<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-ast-global-color-0-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-52f85d35acbc99fbbae1f588cd85d4da\"><strong>EU Just Transition Fund<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-7-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-ea6b1ff5cc4433cc3f88d951b5c57f21 wp-block-paragraph\">The purpose of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emra.ie\/eu-jtf\/\">EU Just Transition Fund (EUJTF)<\/a>, co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union, is to assist the territories most affected by the transition to a climate-neutral economy. In Ireland, this focuses on the wider Midlands region, where there have been direct impacts from the move away from peat production and electricity generation from peat. Up to \u20ac169 million, using Exchequer and EU resources, will be available in the Fund to facilitate a just transition towards a low-carbon economy in the Midlands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-7-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-a8ff5ce3a4c9951879596260217b6b9f wp-block-paragraph\">By providing opportunities for employment in the Territory, the EU JTF can help to create an inclusive, attractive, healthy and sustainable place to live, work and visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-7-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-3f7f33410002fe66048d33adff30ba43 wp-block-paragraph\">The programme priorities of the EU JTF are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-7-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e59435fb78ac5c72248026f8b1f140fa wp-block-paragraph\">1. Generating employment for communities formerly reliant on peat production by investing in the diversification of the local economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-7-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-757c7cd61d9785ef42dde6eba20ca869 wp-block-paragraph\">2. Supporting the restoration, regeneration and repurposing of peatlands and related land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-7-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-cf9116e7ac1f57025ca778d616db0e58 wp-block-paragraph\">3. Providing former peat communities with smart and sustainable mobility options to enable them to benefit directly from the green transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-7-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-11ebe54098176f1c7370c7224e693ac0 wp-block-paragraph\">The Eastern and Midland Regional Assembly (EMRA) are the Managing Authority for Ireland\u2019s EU Just Transition Fund Programme.
