{"id":4107,"date":"2026-07-08T12:22:47","date_gmt":"2026-07-08T11:22:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tocharwetlands.ie\/?p=4107"},"modified":"2026-07-08T12:22:51","modified_gmt":"2026-07-08T11:22:51","slug":"where-the-curlew-calls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tocharwetlands.ie\/ga\/community-stories\/where-the-curlew-calls\/","title":{"rendered":"Where the Curlew Calls\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mapping our changing relationship with the wetlands<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By Helen Shaw, T\u00f3char Stories<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was poet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.janeclarkepoetry.ie\/\">Jane Clarke<\/a> who came up with the title \u2018Where the Curlew Calls\u2019 for our <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/show\/5hj0QcnQMlfJJT2JQ2Jkwh\">podcast <\/a>and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/tocharstories\/\">T\u00f3char Stories <\/a>book we\u2019re bringing together for publication with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lilliputpress.ie\/?srsltid=AfmBOoogwO_3nmD-IbCL8VDDtmMCZZEuxp0umJ9TPQJP_DriZOZqV1-9\">Lilliput Press<\/a> in 2027. Jane, who grew up surrounded by bogs in rural South Roscommon, collaborated with us on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tocharwetlands.ie\/events\/event-international-bog-day-at-heaney-listen-now-again-exhibition\/\">Between the Sights of the Sun event in the Seamus Heaney exhibition<\/a> at the National Library in July last year and she has written an essay for the book retracing her own roots with the bogland through a walk at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitroscommon.ie\/cloonlarge-bog-walk\/\">Cloonlarge Bog, Kilteevan <\/a>&nbsp;&#8211; a nature reserve and bog trail where we have been working with the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tocharwetlands.ie\/fen-restoration\/how-the-people-of-kilteevan-roscommon-became-custodians-of-cloonlarge-bog\/\"> local community <\/a>across the last two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you enter the village of Kilteevan there\u2019s a beautiful placemaking sign featuring the curlew as its icon (an initiative by the unstoppable <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/1111266369\">Eileen Fahey<\/a>) and Jane was lucky enough to hear one at the end of her walk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"558\" height=\"420\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tocharwetlands.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Kilteevan_sign.jpg\" alt=\"Photograph of Kilteevan village entrance placemaking sign (photo Helen Shaw January 2025)\" class=\"wp-image-4110\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tocharwetlands.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Kilteevan_sign.jpg 558w, https:\/\/www.tocharwetlands.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Kilteevan_sign-300x226.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 558px) 100vw, 558px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo: Kilteevan village entrance placemaking sign (photo Helen Shaw January 2025)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In her essay for the forthcoming book Jane writes: \u201cThough only seven miles from my childhood home, I\u2019ve never been on Cloonlarge Bog before. It lies close to Roscommon town at the north-western corner of Lough Ree between the Clooneigh and Hind rivers. The first sound I hear when I step out of the car is the churring of the mistle thrush. Within a hundred yards I\u2019ve been regaled by coal tits, blue tits, robins, blackbirds galore, the harsh alarm call of a magpie, hooded crows and woodpigeons. Another is the renowned Co Offaly author, botanist and geographer <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Feehan\">John Feehan <\/a>whose keynote speech at the launch of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tocharwetlands.ie\/\">T\u00f3char Wetlands Restoration<\/a> has been published as a T\u00f3char pamphlet <em>\u2018<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tocharwetlands.ie\/community-stories\/thinking-like-a-mountain-for-midland-bogs\/\"><em>Thinking like&nbsp; Mountain<\/em><\/a>\u2019 and it takes inspiration from the critical work of the American naturist and writer<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecotoneinc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/aldo-leopold-tlam.pdf\"> Aldo Leopold.<\/a> John has been busy working on the wildflowers of Offaly video series for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.offaly.ie\/heritage-publications\/the-wildflowers-of-offaly\/\">Offaly Heritage<\/a> with nature photographer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tinaclaffey.com\/\">Tina Claffey<\/a> and Tina has captured some wonderful portraits of John for the book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"392\" height=\"585\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tocharwetlands.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/John-Feehan.jpg\" alt=\"Photograph of County Offaly writer and geographer John Feehan (photo Tina Claffey)\" class=\"wp-image-4114\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tocharwetlands.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/John-Feehan.jpg 392w, https:\/\/www.tocharwetlands.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/John-Feehan-201x300.jpg 201w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 392px) 100vw, 392px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo: Co Offaly writer and geographer John Feehan (photo Tina Claffey)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the conclusion of \u2018<em>Thinking like a Mountain<\/em>\u2019 John writes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs we reflect on the enormous challenges we face in our time, it is easy to feel helpless, that there is little we can do apart from using the influence of our voice and vote to get those who represent us politically to echo all our voices on the national and international stage. But we are often reminded of the importance of connecting what is a global challenge back down to our local environment. The first step is to bring these areas within the embrace of the community living around the bog, whatever the measures we take to facilitate their progress towards the future of optimal biodiversity to which their ecological succession is taking them\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tina Claffey, an award-winning macro photographer,&nbsp; is contributing her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tocharwetlands.ie\/community-stories\/tina-claffey-shares-the-joy-of-capturing-the-micro-world-of-the-bog-at-the-bog-bothy-milltownpass\/\">own work <\/a>to the book in a photo essay, and Tina worked with us in the T\u00f3char Stories community storytelling day with the Kilcormac Community <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tocharwetlands.ie\/community-stories\/sharing-our-past-imagining-our-future-kilcormac-september-2025\/\">\u2018Sharing our past, imagining our future\u2019<\/a> last September. Journalist and broadcaster <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/environment\/2025\/05\/31\/irelands-remaining-bogs-can-have-a-second-tale-of-creation-rather-than-extraction\/\">Ella McSweeney<\/a> is another of our commissioned essay writers. Ella has written powerfully about why we need to value our bogland and how it can offer us not just increased biodiversity and stunning places to experience nature but how they can provide us with climate solutions and help secure our future by storing carbon emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/environment\/2025\/05\/31\/irelands-remaining-bogs-can-have-a-second-tale-of-creation-rather-than-extraction\/\">Irish Times feature<\/a> Ella wrote: \u201cBogs have offered us so much, and many are now lost forever. For the small fragments that remain, it\u2019s a blessing that we can at least attempt to bring them, in Feehan\u2019s words, \u201cback to the local embrace\u201d. Their story \u2013 one of abundance and life \u2013 will continue; all they need is for us to step back and allow time to do its work\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The T\u00f3char Stories \u2018Where the Curlew Calls\u2019 book is about the ways in which people and places &#8211; like Kilteevan, in Roscommon &#8211; are guardians of nature, and how the welfare of people and places is interwoven with that of nature. Community champions and custodians including<a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/athena-media\/eileen_panel_fv_audio-1\"> Eileen Fahey,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tocharwetlands.ie\/blog\/were-standing-on-the-past\/\">&nbsp;Eugene Dunbar in Tyrrellspass<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tocharwetlands.ie\/community-stories\/the-unique-and-magical-landscape-of-galways-living-bog\/\">Marie Gilmore in Galway\u2019s Living Bog<\/a> are writing their own personal take on the theme of changing relationships with the land and how we value it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>LISTEN: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/athena-media\/mariegilmore-w_music?si=bd8dfe029bca4bf0b082855067bd6c5e&amp;utm_source=clipboard&amp;utm_medium=text&amp;utm_campaign=social_sharing\"><strong>Marie Gilmore Galway&#8217;s Living Bog<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was lovely on June 22nd to see the children of Kilteevan NS, who we worked with a year ago to create <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tocharwetlands.ie\/latest-news\/kilteevan-primary-school-children-get-to-discover-butterflies-at-their-local-bog-and-create-their-own-artwork\/\">the butterfly and bog art project<\/a> with artist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.anniehollandart.com\/home.html\">Annie Holland<\/a>, celebrating their end of school year with a gathering on Cloonlarge Bog where Eileen and the Kilteevan Tidy Towns marked the arrival of a new sculpture piece, a wishing chair, by local artist Mark Feeley. You can see the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tocharwetlands.ie\/latest-news\/tochar-stories-workshop-with-st-annes-school-tyrrellspass-features-on-countrywide-bog-special\/\"> St Anne\u2019s <\/a>project if you take a stroll on Cloncrow Bog as the children\u2019s art &#8211; made with guidance from Eugene Dunbar, artist Annie Holland and their teacher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tocharwetlands.ie\/blog\/tyrrellspass-children-get-to-show-and-tell-their-own-stories-of-cloncrow-bog\/\">Laura Lynch<\/a> &#8211; greets you at the entrance to the
