{"id":3979,"date":"2026-05-19T13:47:49","date_gmt":"2026-05-19T12:47:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tocharwetlands.ie\/?p=3979"},"modified":"2026-05-19T13:48:40","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T12:48:40","slug":"hugh-shepherd-a-life-spent-paying-attention-to-nature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tocharwetlands.ie\/ga\/blog\/hugh-shepherd-a-life-spent-paying-attention-to-nature\/","title":{"rendered":"Hugh Shepherd : A life spent paying attention to nature"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Helen Shaw &#8211; T\u00f3char Stories<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">I first met\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DW_yHPWkrZi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hugh Shepherd\u00a0<\/a>in late November 2024, when he offered to guide me on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abbeyleixbog.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Abbeyleix Bog,<\/a>\u00a0just as<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tocharwetlands.ie\/tochar-stories\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0T\u00f3char Stories<\/a>\u00a0began. While\u00a0everyday\u00a0in this project is a school day, in that\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0always learning, that morning with Hugh, and artist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.anniehollandphotography.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Annie Holland<\/a>, was a revelation. Hugh opened my ears and eyes to the rich tapestry of life on the bog, the 600 species of moths, the precious native butterflies like the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npws.ie\/research-projects\/animal-species\/invertebrates\/marsh-fritillary-euphydryas-aurinia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marsh Fritillary,<\/a>\u00a0Ireland\u2019s only protected butterfly, and the habitat they need to survive. The Marsh Fritillary (<em>Euphydryas\u00a0aurinia)<\/em>,\u00a0breeds\u00a0and lives in\u00a0Abbeyleix\u00a0Bog, and relies on the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishwildflowers.ie\/pages\/133a.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0Devil&#8217;s-bit Scabious<\/a>\u00a0plant to lay its eggs and feed. He grew up in England loving the outdoors,\u00a0nature\u00a0and wildlife in a family\u00a0where\u00a0knowing the names of trees and\u00a0identifying\u00a0birdsong was just part of life.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>LISTEN\/ AUDIO:\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/athena-media\/hugh-shepard-abbeyleix-pod-mix\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hugh Shepherd, a life spent paying attention to nature<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201c I\u00a0lived in London\u00a0actually when\u00a0I was a youngster, but we had a garden and it was full of wildlife. I had my own little garden when I was 3 years old and we had hedgehogs and various\u00a0things\u00a0came through the garden,\u201d Hugh says laughing at the memory and crediting his mother with nourishing his lifelong love of nature.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>When Hugh is now in his\u00a0eighties\u00a0his hearing\u00a0remains\u00a0remarkable. As we\u00a0walk\u00a0he picks out and names every bird, sometimes when the sound is almost indistinguishable for us. He is used to people seeing it as a super talent but says\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0simply been a life of training &#8211; of paying attention. \u201cOur hearing cuts most things out apart from what\u00a0you&#8217;re\u00a0listening to. You\u00a0have to\u00a0train yourself to not do that.\u00a0It&#8217;s hard work, actually, but once you&#8217;ve done it, you know, you hear everything.\u00a0And you can tune in on it\u201d,\u00a0he says.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tocharwetlands.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Hugh Shephard dressed in outdoor gear and wellies sitting on a bench made from wood in front foliage and trees in winter. \" class=\"wp-image-3983\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Photo: Hugh Shepherd on one of the benches he has crafted from fallen logs, March 2026\u00a0(credit Stephen Crilly)<\/em>\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As we walk in the nature reserve of\u00a0Abbeyleix\u00a0Bog, a community-led project celebrating 26 years of conservation work this year, Hugh is always working; picking up litter, checking on wooden seats or bird boxes he has made down the years, or occasionally checking on the monitoring tools he has set up to track wildlife in the bog. He comes less to the bog loop\u00a0now,\u00a0his visits are usually\u00a0very early, when there is low human traffic and it is quiet, so birds,\u00a0insects\u00a0and wildlife like the deer, in the woodlands, are more active.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>WATCH\/VIDEO:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/1191998536?fl=ip&amp;fe=ec\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hugh Shepherd on the Abbeyleix Bog walk<\/a>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>He got involved in\u00a0Abbeyleix\u00a0Bog Project around 2012 when the community group were clearing trees, volunteer pines, from the bog and beginning to create the boardwalk.\u00a0\u201c I\u00a0just joined in, and you know, I did a degree in Nottingham University, and one of my subjects was bog ecology.\u00a0So\u00a0it was just going back to what\u00a0I&#8217;d\u00a0done sort of 30 years before, or more\u201d, Hugh says modestly. People like Ricky Whelan, Offaly\u2019s Biodiversity Officer, who was himself a volunteer leader in\u00a0Abbeyleix\u00a0Bog, praises the unique role Hugh played, combining bog ecology\u00a0expertise\u00a0with hands-on skills in tree maintenance and wood crafting let alone photography. It\u2019s a haven to visit. But for him the price of success has been the challenge of trying to manage the ever increasing number of visitors &#8211; and sometimes the thoughtless littering and dog poo humans can bring into the reserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;I mean, as far as\u00a0I&#8217;m\u00a0concerned, the place just has too many people on it. The wildlife takes itself off as far as possible. And you notice that with the animal population. I used to get quite a lot of them on the camera (<em>discreet monitoring cameras placed within the woodlands)<\/em>\u00a0 and\u00a0now as soon as summer comes, there&#8217;s not a sign of them because there&#8217;s too many people with too many dogs that are let off and things like that.\u00a0So\u00a0it&#8217;s\u00a0difficult\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We\u00a0don&#8217;t\u00a0have people, very many people who are aware of the biology of the place. The people who are working here do a wonderful job looking after the paths and everything else, but there are very few people who understand how the bog works. He is a natural educator and as always when I leave him and&nbsp;Abbeyleix&nbsp;I wish we could match him with a cadre of enthusiastic apprentices who could gain from that wealth; that life of paying
