Research shows Irish people value restored wetlands for their nature, environmental and community benefits<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

International Bog Day<\/em> (Sunday 27th<\/sup> July) is about conservation and also a moment to celebrate the character, culture and quiet beauty of Ireland\u2019s wetlands. Wetlands are one of Ireland\u2019s most distinctive habitats, supporting thousands of rare species and vital to the country\u2019s wildlife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Research Findings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

RED C research commissioned this year by the T\u00f3char Midlands Wetlands Restoration Project <\/em>found that over half of people agree that restoration delivers ecological, economic and social benefits. Almost half (48%) of people believe the environmental benefits outweigh the economic ones. And 66% of adults in Ireland\u2019s recognise wetlands’ role in flood prevention.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This Bog Day, the T\u00f3char Project is encouraging people to celebrate not just wetlands, but fens, an often lesser known yet equally important wetland type. While bogs are rain-fed, fens are wetland areas fed by groundwater or springs. Fens tend support a wide variety of plants and insects including orchids, dragonflies, reed bunting, and sedge warblers.
